Nancy A. Sachitano
Ms. Sachitano has concentrated her practice in family law for more than twenty (20) years. She focuses on family law litigation, divorce tax planning, disposition of government and private retirement benefits, appellate litigation, and mediation. She is trained in collaborative law.
A highly regarded family law practitioner, Ms. Sachitano was selected by Washingtonian Magazine as one of the top divorce lawyers in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area and one of the Best Lawyers in America. She is repeatedly recognized as one of the top 25 women lawyers in Maryland and one of the top women lawyers in the District of Columbia by SuperLawyers Magazine and Martindale -Hubbell's Bar Register of Pre-Eminent Lawyers gives her its highest (AV) rating. A past winner of the Professionalism Award from the Montgomery County Bar Association, she has also received numerous other awards including the Leadership in Law Award from The Daily Record in 2007, and The Pro Bono Resource Center of Maryland’s award for outstanding pro bono contributions.
Noted for her commitment to public service, Ms. Sachitano has twice been appointed by the Governor of Maryland to the board of the Maryland Legal Services Corporation (MLSC); she currently serves as Treasurer. She served on the Board of the Montgomery County Bar Foundation, and is a past Treasurer of both the Foundation and Montgomery County Bar Association. She is a past president of the Women’s Bar Association of Maryland–Montgomery County Chapter and a longtime member of that group’s Executive Committee.
She works throughout the Maryland and District of Columbia legal communities to provide leadership training, mentoring, and family law education, such as a recent program on prenuptial agreements. She has also lectured on alimony, domestic violence and pendente lite relief.
In addition, Ms. Sachitano is a published author. Her works include Avoiding the Excise Tax on Early Withdrawal of Retirement in Divorce, Bar Bulletin, Maryland State Bar Association Newsletter, 2001; Child Support, The Pro Bono Desk Manual 17-1, Pro Bono Coordinating Council, 1995; and Wage Discrimination - A Family Issue, Family and Work: Bridging the Gap (with Winn Newman & Christine Owens), Economic Policy Council of the UNA-USA, 1986.
Ms. Sachitano is a member of the bars of Maryland and the District of Columbia, as well as the Supreme Court of the United States. She received her J.D. from Catholic University of America, Columbus School of Law in Washington, D.C. in 1987.
